Chelsea FC and their awkward policies.

The dust has settled after the last 24 hours. Roman Abramovich has once again continued his incredible record of hiring and firing some of the world's best coaches. In this case, one of the Premier leagues most respected young coaches - who only six months ago delivered the coveted Champions League to the most demanding owner in the top flight.

Di Matteo was a surprising choice when he was first appointed as Chelsea manager, however, it became apparent very quickly that the disillusionment that had been the staple mark of Andre Villas Boas' ill fated stint as manager was being quickly diminished. The 4-1 drubbing of Napoli in the last 16 of the Champions League was a moral boosting result that had the "big-names" of the dressing room ; Terry, Lampard and Drogba restored to the side and all scoring. Di Matteo made the game simple, training enjoyable and according to most reports his man management skills were excellent.

Now, Chelsea fans are faced with yet another dismissal of a successful manager. Abramovich obviously a long term admirer of the Barcelona model, in terms of both the playing style and structure. However, this is where the owner needs to snap out of his dream-like haze. Chelsea will NEVER be Barcelona. As a football club they, unfortunately, lack the history and pressure that comes with being a Barcelona player - technically brilliant, playing exceptional short passing football (one recent goal recorded 97 passes from back to front until the ball was in the net) along with this a large majority of Barcelona's squad has always been Spanish, bought through their youth system - with an intrinsic understanding of what it is to play for Barcelona. Chelsea are a club governed by a money, since 2003 they have bought, rather than developed and sold on rather than nurtured - and this is to their detriment.

However, since Abramovich took over - Chelsea are the most successful club in England. In that nine year stint Chelsea have won ten trophies: 3 premier leagues, 4 FA Cups, 2 League Cups and a Champions leaguer - this is compared to Man United's 9, Liverpool's 3 Manchester City's 2 and Arsenal's 1. So there is an argument that this crazy world of Chelsea FC does breed success.

Chelsea's latest manager is Rafael Benitez, to say that the appointment has gone like a lead balloon is a massive understatement - he once said Chelsea fans "lacked passion" also saying "I would never take that job". So what has changed? Well both parties are desperate. Chelsea are waiting for Guardiola, like a groom waiting for a temperamental bride at the altar. Benitez - out of a job since his terrible reign at Inter Milan two years ago - has one last shot at a big club. If Guardiola's coming is the marriage , then the next 6 months could be the stag do from hell.
