My Top 10 Songs of 2012 ( so far…)

In response to Nicholas Coomb's Hipster-ridden article on his top ten songs of 2012, I have decided to follow suit and construct a list of my own: So here it goes - my top ten songs of 2012 (so far…)

10) Spectrum (say my name) Remix - Florence and The Machine Ft. Calvin Harris

The song that haunted everyones summer. A fantastic remix which had Calvin Harris laying down his pop infused,  chart conquering dance floor beats behind Florence's Kate Bush-esque vocals to produce not only one of the songs of the summer, but one of the songs of the year.

9) Sun - Two Door Cinema Club

The second single from their new record 'Beacon', shows the band becoming a bigger force. A building verse, with bangor lads slowly building towards a fantastic second chorus finale, with a big band (and probably a bigger budget) behind an even greater sound that is likely to propel the band up the festival listings in the summer.

8) Toulouse - Nicky Romero

I first heard this in my cousins bedroom on a sunny sunday evening, and all it made me to do is want to go out. It's an incredible beat and the build up to the 'drop' will leave even the most adverse nightclub lover tapping their foot and craving a vodka red bull.

7) Freedom at 21 - Jack White

Jack White's debut solo album is an amazing record, and my personal favourite from it is Freedom at 21. The drums and bass that Jack's distinctive voice screeches over is brilliant, as is the album from the former White Stripes man.

6)Little Black Submarines - The Black Keys

The song is almost chopped into two different parts, the slow beginning with the rasping guitars and voices leads into a crescendo typical of The Black Keys sound, strong guitar rifts and a catchy chorus.

5) Lightning Bolt - Jake Bugg

Jake's rockabilly style hit the big time and scored him a number one album after this song was featured during the backdrop of the Olympics as, you guessed it, the BBC were building up to Usain's Bolt's 100m final. Bugg, now touring the USA with Noel Gallagher has two sold out tours in November and February.

4) Genesis - Grimes

As Coomb's so brilliantly put it - she is the Queen of Hipsters. However, her debut album is brilliant and this song has to be the pick of the bunch. The simplistically excellent beat is sung over by Grimes' majestically hypnotic voice. She surely has a huge year ahead of her.

3) Supremacy - Muse

Why this wasn't the bond theme is beyond me. When I first heard it I felt the verse drones on too long, however, Matt Bellamy's belting vocals over a rift that needs to be played at full volume makes you think that this song was built for the stadiums Muse sell out time and time again.

2) R U Mine? - Arctic Monkeys

Alex Turner said their next album - the bands fifth is inspired by the American muscle cars they have fallen in love with out in the deserts of the US, and strangely you can hear it in this song - without the Arctic Monkey's ever losing the bands iconic sound - mainly held together by Matt Helder's excellent drums and Turner's now iconic voice.

1) Lover of the Light - Mumford & Son's

This is probably an incredibly bias view, but the song is phenomenal. The middle part, where it quietens down only to build into an emotive and banjo-blasitng chorus is, simply brilliant. The band will always have their critics, but in my eyes - they can do no wrong.
